ALLERGY TESTING VIDEOS AND INFORMATION

Allergy Skin Testing Demonstration

In this scratch test video, Dr. Vuong Nayima, D.O., explains the different types of allergy tests that can be performed. Allergy tests can be done for environmental allergens, which includes cats, dogs, dust mites, mold, grass, trees, and weeds, or other allergens, like drugs, food, chemicals, and venom.

The most common form of allergy testing is the scratch test. It is performed on a bare back with plastic applicators that contain allergens of interest. There is mild irritation with testing, but it is extremely safe and is an effective way to diagnose many allergic conditions.

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) Video

Pulmonary Function Tests, also known as PFTs, provide information about how well you’re breathing and how your lungs are functioning.

  1. While standing, the allergist will give you a nose clip. Take a deep breath and then place a tube in your mouth. Exhale as hard as you can for as long as you can. Breathe again through the tube and remove it. Make sure to get a good seal with your lips. When exhaling, there will be a birthday cake on the screen; try to blow out all of the candles!
  2. Repeat this process three times.
  3. Use an inhaler to help open your lungs to give the doctor a better idea about your lung function. Hold your breath for 10 seconds to get all of the medication in.
  4. 15 minutes after using the inhaler, repeat the test from earlier three times.
